Via delle Abbazie

Via delle Abbazie

Levante Route

It starts at Novacella, in South Tyrol, or at Rosazzo in Friuli with the Ingresso Adriatico. It crosses the Veneto and follows the sea down to Marche and Abruzzo, then heads for Montecassino. The most paved of the three: flat cycle paths in the north, real climbs in the Apennines.

Alerts on this route

  • Stage 3 · Trento → Bassano: The Trento-Bassano line had a total suspension between Trento and Borgo Valsugana Centro from 22 February to 8 December 2025, for electrification work. Regional trains stayed replaced by buses until 13 June 2026. Lots 2 and 3, another 50 km of electrification, are still at the feasibility study stage: further interruptions are likely in coming years. Replacement buses generally don't take bikes: check before you count on the train as plan B. (checked September 2026)
  • Stage 7 · Pomposa → Ravenna: Only the Porto Garibaldi-Lido degli Estensi ferry is a regular year-round service (one euro, bikes included). Other crossings further north toward Gorino are informal and with no confirmed timetable. Do not plan the stage around a fixed time without checking again. (n.d.)
  • Stage 10 · Urbino → Fonte Avellana: After the 2022 flood the road from Frontone stayed closed for about a year, then was resurfaced. The surface is good today; the last 1.4 km before the Forchetta climb at 11-13%. After heavy rain, check conditions before climbing. (checked September 2026)
  • Stage 11 · Fonte Avellana → Camerino: Camerino's historic centre remains one big construction site. As of September 2026 structural work on the cathedral square is at 50 percent and restoration at 20 percent, with reopening expected within a few years. 2026 is the year the public works start, not the year they finish. Bars and shops stay mostly in the outer parts of town. (checked September 2026)
  • Stage 14 · Ascoli Piceno → L'Aquila: Works on the SS4 Salaria bypass between Trisungo and Arquata del Tronto stay active. By mid-2025 Anas had finished excavating the Trisungo tunnel, the first lot of a 440 million euro project. The second lot, funded for 357 million, was still being tendered. Where you can, favour the Salaria Vecchia, the low-traffic BI9 cycle route. (checked September 2026)
