Cookie Policy
Last updated: 23 September 2026
This page explains which cookies and similar tools viadelleabbazie.com uses, what they are for, and how you can accept them, refuse them or change your mind. It supplements the privacy policy, which covers the data controller, legal bases, transfers and your rights.
The controller is Andrea Bariselli, a private individual, on behalf of Via delle Abbazie: an amateur, non-profit project that aims only to share knowledge. The site uses no advertising, profiling or marketing cookies.
This is a translation provided for convenience. In case of discrepancy, the Italian version prevails.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website saves on your device and reads again on later visits. Similar tools, such as the browser's local storage (localStorage), work in a similar way and follow the same rules.
The law distinguishes between:
- technical cookies, needed to run the site or to provide a service you asked for: they do not require consent;
- third-party analytics cookies and profiling cookies: they may only be used with your prior consent.
2. Cookies used on this site
The site does not use profiling or advertising cookies. It only uses:
- one technical tool to remember your cookie choice;
- Google Analytics 4 cookies, only if you accept them.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Type | Duration | Consent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
vda-consent |
Via delle Abbazie (first party) | Stores the choice you made in the banner (accepted / refused) and its date, so the banner is not shown on every page. | Technical (localStorage) | 6 months | Not required |
_ga |
Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC (first-party cookie set by Google Analytics) | Distinguishes visitors pseudonymously to produce aggregate visit statistics. | Analytics | 2 years | Yes |
_ga_E7JGXSFGLS |
Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC (first-party cookie set by Google Analytics) | Keeps the session state for this site's Google Analytics 4 property. | Analytics | 2 years | Yes |
The duration of the Google Analytics cookies is Google's default; some browsers shorten it automatically. The data collected is kept in Google Analytics for 14 months. How Google uses this data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
How Google Analytics works on this site
We use Google's consent mode (Consent Mode v2) with every category set to “denied” until you make a choice. Until you click “Accept”, Google Analytics is not switched on, sets no cookies and receives no data.
If you accept, only the analytics_storage category is enabled. The advertising categories (ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization) always stay “denied”, and we do not use Google Signals or any advertising features.
Services that set no cookies
- Maps (Esri): map tiles are downloaded from Esri's servers, which receive your IP address and the technical request data. The site sets no cookies for this service.
- Komoot routes: the Komoot frame on the stage pages only loads when you click it. From then on Komoot may set its own cookies, under its cookie policy.
- Fonts, photos and libraries: served by the site itself, with no third-party cookies.
- Project updates form (Netlify Forms): sets no profiling cookies; the data you submit is processed as described in the privacy policy.
- GPX, PDF and credential: generated in your browser, with no cookies.
If you click links to external sites (for example Instagram or Substack), those sites may set their own cookies under their own policies, which we do not control.
3. The banner and your choice
On your first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. The “Accept” and “Reject” buttons are equally prominent. Closing the banner with the X keeps the default settings, which means refusal. Scrolling or continuing to browse does not count as consent.
Your choice is remembered for 6 months. After that, or if the cookies used by the site change, the banner will be shown again.
4. How to change your mind or withdraw consent
- On the site: click the “Manage cookies” link at the bottom of every page. The banner reopens and you can change your choice at any time. If you withdraw consent, Google Analytics is switched off and the
_gaand_ga_E7JGXSFGLScookies are no longer used. - In your browser: you can delete cookies already stored and block them in your browser settings (usually under “Privacy” or “Security”). Blocking technical storage may stop the site from remembering your choice.
- Google browser add-on: you can install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
