Overview

A rolling Apennine stage descending from Fonte Avellana and crossing the inner valleys of the Marche, among Romanesque abbeys, paper towns and high vineyards, to Camerino, a ducal city on a hill.

Notes from the road

You descend from Catria through woods and narrow valleys, then the road opens toward Fabriano. Better to check beforehand what is really open downtown, before climbing into town after an already long day. In Camerino the cranes remain part of the landscape, the building sites more visible than the historic centre itself.

What to see

The Frasassi Caves and the Gola del Furlo are optional detours, off the direct route. They require extra hours, not included in the stated distance and climbing.

Where to sleep

Hotels in Camerino (70-110€); local agriturismo (55-80€); B&Bs (65-90€); religious guesthouses (50-70€)

Where to eat

Vincisgrassi, crescia, Marche cured meats, Verdicchio di Matelica DOC, truffles (in season)

Tips

Camerino sits on a hill with decisive ramps at the finish. Water sources vary in the mountain sections: plan ahead. The Frasassi Caves detour takes half a day but is unforgettable.

Water & supplies

Fountains in Sassoferrato and Fabriano, at mid-stage; food shops in Matelica towards the end. Quiet hills, with no gaps longer than 15 km. Camerino, up on its hill, has bars and shops mostly on the outskirts: the historic centre is still under reconstruction, with public building sites due to open in 2026.
