Overview
A crossing of the Friulian plain from Udine into the Veneto: the route traverses the gravelly bed of the Tagliamento, brushes past villas and orderly farmland and reaches Conegliano, home of Prosecco and of Cima da Conegliano.
Notes from the road
The Friulian plain opens wide to the gravel bed of the Tagliamento. The bridge is long and exposed: a crosswind deserves attention. Codroipo and Sacile break up the stage with water and shade. Conegliano closes the day among the first hills of Prosecco.
What to see
Udine, Villa Manin in Passariano (residence of the last Doge), Tagliamento riverbed, Sacile the "garden of the Serenissima", Conegliano with its castle, cathedral and School of Oenology
Where to sleep
Hotels and B&Bs in Conegliano (65-100€); agriturismo of the Treviso plain (55-80€); B&B in Sacile (60-85€)
Where to eat
San Daniele prosciutto, brovada e muset, hop-shoot risotto (in spring), Prosecco DOCG, Montasio cheese
Tips
Flat but exposed stage: mind the wind and the busy stretches of the foothill road, preferring minor roads. The Tagliamento bridge is long: ride it with care.
Water & supplies
Fountains and bars in Codroipo and Sacile; an urbanised plain with continuous services. The Tagliamento crossing is on a long, wind-exposed bridge. No isolated sections.
