Overview

First stage of the Adriatic Approach: short and very gentle, from the Abbey of Rosazzo among the vineyards of the Colli Orientali del Friuli to Udine, the city of Tiepolo. A perfect warm-up for the legs.

Notes from the road

The shortest stage of the journey opens among the vineyards of the Colli Orientali. Rosazzo smells of roses and of wine just bottled. Manzano and Buttrio offer a coffee at the midpoint, unhurried. Udine arrives after a few hours of calm riding, good for loosening the legs.

What to see

Abbey of Rosazzo with its rose garden, Colli Orientali vineyards, Manzano and the chair-making district, Udine with Piazza Libertà, the castle and Tiepolo's frescoes

Where to sleep

Hotels and B&Bs in Udine (65-100€); Colli Orientali agriturismo (55-80€); religious guesthouses (45-65€)

Where to eat

Frico with polenta, San Daniele DOP prosciutto, Friulian salami, Colli Orientali white wines (Friulano, Picolit), gubana cake

Tips

A short stage (21 km): ideal for a relaxed start after visiting the abbey. Gentle hills without difficulty. In Udine, treat yourself to a tajut, the Friulian aperitif glass of wine.

Water & supplies

A short stage through the vineyards of the Colli Orientali: bars in Manzano and Buttrio at the halfway point. Frequent water and services, no isolated sections. Udine is reached in a couple of hours of easy riding.
