Overview

A completely flat stage through the lowlands of the Ferrarese and the Po Delta, following cycle paths and embankment roads to the Abbey of Pomposa, spiritual beacon of the delta people. Farmland and lagoon landscape, boundless horizons.

Notes from the road

The Delta opens wide and windy, with no shelter from the sun. Between Ostellato and Pomposa the kilometres without food or water run into the dozens: better to leave with bottles full. Mosquitoes arrive punctually at sunset, repellent always within reach. The Abbey of Pomposa closes the stage with its solitary bell tower.

What to see

Walls and Este Castle of Ferrara, Po di Volano, Great Mesola Wood with its deer, Mesola Castle, Abbey of Pomposa with its Romanesque bell tower and mosaics

Where to sleep

Po Delta agriturismo (50-75€); B&B in Mesola (55-80€); hostels and lodgings near Pomposa (50-70€); simple hotels in Codigoro (60-90€)

Where to eat

Oven-baked eel, seafood risotto, lagoon fish, Po Delta IGP rice, Fortana of the sands

Tips

A very easy stage, good for recovery. The delta wind can be ferocious: pace yourself if it is against you. A rich area for birdwatching: bring binoculars.

Water & supplies

Bars in Ostellato at mid-stage, then the Delta: open, windy, with 15-20 km of neither refreshments nor shade. Fountain at Pomposa Abbey. In summer, humid heat and mosquitoes: start early and bring repellent.
