Overview

A long, demanding stage that rounds the Sibillini Mountains along their eastern flank, through Apennine villages and remote valleys, to Ascoli Piceno, the city of travertine.

Notes from the road

The route never tires of climbing and dropping through the woods of the Sibillini. Amandola arrives like relief, its bars open on the piazza. The wind turns fast above a thousand metres, better to keep a jacket always within reach. Ascoli closes the day with travertine that glows at sunset.

What to see

Lake Fiastra, eastern flank of the Sibillini, Amandola, Montefortino and the Sanctuary of the Ambro, Comunanza, Ascoli Piceno with travertine Piazza del Popolo

Where to sleep

Sibillini agriturismo (55-85€); B&B in Ascoli Piceno (70-100€); hotels in Ascoli (80-130€); religious guesthouses (50-70€)

Where to eat

Olive all'ascolana, vincisgrassi, Ascoli mixed fry, Rosso Piceno, Ascoli anisetta

Tips

A long stage (85 km) of relentless rolling terrain: the toughest of the Marche section. Mountain weather changes fast: carry a rain shell. The final descent into Ascoli is fast.

Water & supplies

Fountains in Amandola and Comunanza, past the halfway point; between Fiastra and Amandola about 25 km of mountains with very few services. Irregular phone coverage below the Sibillini; carry food and a windproof. Ascoli Piceno has every service on arrival. After heavy rain the SS78 between Amandola and Comunanza is prone to landslides and single-lane traffic (most recently in April 2026): check before setting off.
