Overview
A picturesque, flat stage from Pomposa towards Ravenna, between the Comacchio lagoons and the coastal pine woods: here the delta landscape gives way to great Byzantine history.
Notes from the road
The Valli di Comacchio are crossed on embankments suspended between sky and water. The Argine degli Angeli has its own hours and a speed limit, to respect calmly. Out of season the seaside resorts close almost everything: rely on the main towns for water and food. The Porto Garibaldi ferry carries the bike across for one euro.
What to see
Abbey of Pomposa, Comacchio lagoons with flamingos, Comacchio with the Trepponti, pine woods of San Vitale and Classe, Byzantine monuments of Ravenna (Basilica of San Vitale, Mausoleum of Theodoric), Sant'Apollinare in Classe
Where to sleep
Lagoon agriturismo (50-75€); B&B in Comacchio (60-85€); hotels in Ravenna (75-120€); Ravenna religious guesthouses (50-70€)
Where to eat
Marinated Comacchio eel, brodetto fish stew, seafood risotto, piadina romagnola, cappelletti
Tips
River embankments can be muddy in spring: check conditions first. Paths shared with birdwatchers and walkers. Central Ravenna deserves half a day for the mosaics.
Water & supplies
Water and bars along the beach resorts, but almost everything closes off-season: from October to April count only on the main centres (Casal Borsetti, Marina Romea). Shady pine woods alternate with windy embankments; mosquitoes at dusk. Ravenna has everything on arrival. Only the Porto Garibaldi-Lido degli Estensi ferry runs year-round, one euro with bikes included; other crossings further north are informal, with no confirmed timetable.
