Abbazia di Rosazzo
Benedictine abbey in Friuli.

History
Born around the year 800 as the hermitage of the hermit Alemanno, it became an Augustinian and then Benedictine abbey, contested for centuries between the patriarchs of Aquileia, Venice and the Empire for its strategic position on the Colli Orientali of Friuli. It is called the "Monastery of the Roses" for the historic rose garden that still blooms on its terraces. Today it belongs to the Archdiocese of Udine and is animated by a Foundation that organises concerts, exhibitions and events, surrounded by celebrated vineyards producing some of Friuli's best-known whites.

Starting point of the Adriatic variant: sleep inside the abbey on the hill of Rosazzo, among the vineyards of the Colli Orientali del Friuli.
Getting there by bike
From the town of Manzano you climb to the hill of Rosazzo on an asphalt road through the vineyards: a short but decisive climb, a couple of kilometres with gradients to take calmly, good surface. Bikes can be parked in the forecourt by the entrance. The abbey can be visited freely during opening hours (roughly 9am-12pm and 3-6pm); paid entry only for special events such as "Rosazzo da Rosa" in May.
The climb among the vineyards of the Colli Orientali is short but bites in the legs. At the top, the guesthouse rooms allow a stay of more than one night. No bike shop on site, well-equipped towns stay in Manzano and Cividale.
Bike can be parked in the forecourt. Water and services at the building; wineries and osterias of the Colli Orientali nearby.
