Overview

A short, scenic stage from Camerino into the Sibillini Mountains National Park, descending through woods and meadows to the turquoise waters of Lake Fiastra.

Notes from the road

From Camerino you descend into the park, the woods opening at intervals onto the meadows of the Sibillini. The lake appears suddenly, turquoise against the rock. Sheepdogs deserve respect from a distance, dismount and walk. It is a short stage but the stop at the lake is worth the time it asks.

What to see

Camerino historic centre, Sibillini Mountains National Park, mountain villages of the Valfornace, Lake Fiastra with its turquoise waters, Lame Rosse (walking detour from the lake)

Where to sleep

Hotels and B&Bs in San Lorenzo al Lago and Fiastra (55-85€); Sibillini agriturismo (55-80€); park refuges (40-65€)

Where to eat

Mountain trout, vincisgrassi, ciauscolo IGP (soft Marche salami), Sibillini pecorino, mountain honey

Tips

A short stage (36 km): ideal for an afternoon walk to the Lame Rosse. The descent to the lake is steep in places: mind your brakes. A post-earthquake recovery area: limited services but a warm welcome.

Water & supplies

Few services: bars in Camerino at the start and Valfornace at mid-stage; the 2016 earthquake area still has reduced services, so carry supplies. Fountains in the villages; patchy coverage in the mountains. Seasonal bars at Lake Fiastra. Faced with Maremma sheepdogs, better not to run and not to stare. Best to dismount and use the bike as a shield toward the dog. Move away calmly, without approaching the flock.
