Overview

A transfer stage through the Piedmont hills towards the Tortona area. The route descends steadily from the Asti hills to the Alessandria plain, finishing at the foot of the Tortona hills.

Notes from the road

The plain between Alessandria and Tortona stretches open and windy, with almost no shade. Stock up well in Asti, the villages in between offer little along the way. The Tortona hills stay gentle, a good stretch for riding without hurry. Tortona closes the day with a station a short walk from the centre.

What to see

Asti historic centre, southern Monferrato hills, Alessandria with its Citadel, Tortona with the cathedral and castle tower

Where to sleep

Hotel in Tortona (70-95€); B&B in the historic centre (65-85€); agriturismo of the Tortonese (55-75€)

Where to eat

Agnolotti, Nobile del Giarolo salami, Montébore cheese, Timorasso and Gavi white wines, fragrant Tortona strawberries (in season)

Tips

A relatively easy, mostly flat stage. Stock up in Asti. The route crosses rural areas: carry water.

Water & supplies

Bars and fountains in Felizzano and Alessandria, at mid-stage. Between Alessandria and Tortona about 20 km of open plain with few services, exposed to the wind. Stock up in Asti at the start; no coverage issues.
