Overview

A demanding stage through the Monferrato hills towards Asti. The route climbs and descends continuously through Barbera and Moscato vineyards, passing fortified hilltop villages.

Notes from the road

Leaving Staffarda early helps dodge the heat on the rolling middle section. Staying alert matters too in the final kilometres into Asti, where traffic grows. The ramps come short but insistent through the Barbera vineyards. Bars in the hill villages do not always open on weekdays, fountains in the piazzas remain the safe backup, cool under the morning sun.

What to see

Abbazia di Staffarda, Barbera and Moscato d'Asti vineyards, fortified villages of the Roero and Monferrato, Asti with its medieval towers

Where to sleep

Hotel Aleramo in Asti (70-100€); B&B among the Asti vineyards (60-85€); Agriturismo Moscato (65-90€)

Where to eat

Tajarin with truffle, beef braised in Barbera, agnolotti del Monferrato, sweet Moscato d'Asti

Tips

Very hilly stage with constant climbs and descents. Beautiful vineyards but narrow roads. An early start from Staffarda is recommended.

Water & supplies

Bars and fountains in Saluzzo shortly after the start, then in the villages of the Roero and Monferrato at mid-stage. The rolling vineyard roads are sun-exposed and village bars are not always open on weekdays: refill at the fountains in the squares. The last kilometres into Asti are on busier roads.
