Overview

A picturesque stage that turns from Trento into the Valsugana, following the cycle path along the Brenta past the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico, walled villages and the narrow Canale di Brenta gorge, to historic Bassano del Grappa.

Notes from the road

The Valsugana narrows the road into the gorge between Cismon and Valstagna, in the shade of the woods. The stretch toward Enego suffered landslides in past years, now secured with rockfall netting. Better to check rail notices before setting off: electrification works suspend trains in patches. Levico and Borgo Valsugana guarantee water and food at midday.

What to see

Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento, lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico, Borgo Valsugana, Canale di Brenta gorge (Valstagna and Cismon), Bassano del Grappa with the Ponte degli Alpini

Where to sleep

Valsugana agriturismo (55-80€); B&B in Bassano (70-100€); Bassano hostel (35-50€); religious guesthouses (50-70€)

Where to eat

Brenta trout, Bassano DOP asparagus (in spring), grappa from the historic distilleries, Asiago DOP cheese, polenta with mushrooms

Tips

The Valsugana cycle path is well signposted and gently downhill after the Caldonazzo saddle. Some gorge sections are narrow and crowded in summer. Bassano deserves an evening on the bridge.

Water & supplies

Fountains and bike-grills all along the Valsugana: Levico, Borgo Valsugana at mid-stage, then Grigno. The Brenta canyon between Cismon and Valstagna is narrow and shady but never far from villages. No water or coverage problems. The Trento-Bassano railway is subject to scheduled suspensions in 2025-2026 for electrification works. Replacement buses generally do not carry bikes. Better not to rely on the train without checking beforehand.
