Overview

From Subiaco the road climbs to the Arcinazzo plateaux, then a long descent leads into the Ciociaria. The bike crosses the Hernici villages and the Liri valley to the Cistercian abbey of Casamari.

Notes from the road

From Subiaco the hairpins toward the Sacro Speco warm the legs at once, between rock and the gorges of the Aniene. The Simbruini give dense beech woods and silence, with some of the steepest grades of the whole journey. At the Arcinazzo plateaux the road eases, with an open view over the mountains. The descent into the Ciociaria brings milder air and Hernici towns like Fiuggi and Alatri. Casamari closes the stage with its Cistercian portico, silent as evening falls.

What to see

Monasteries of Subiaco, the Aniene valley, Altipiani di Arcinazzo, Alatri with its cyclopean acropolis, medieval Veroli, Abbey of Casamari

Where to sleep

Guesthouse at the Abbey of Casamari (around €20 for the room only, to confirm at booking; the guesthouse is for men; women and mixed groups stay in the nuns’ house next door; limited places); farmhouses and B&Bs around Veroli (€50-80); small local hotels (€55-85)

Where to eat

Fini fini pasta, pasta e fagioli with pork rind, artichokes, pecorino romano DOP, simple meals at the monastery for guests staying there

Tips

Moderately difficult stage, 71 km and 1,190 m of climbing. The first part climbs to the Arcinazzo plateaux, about 400 m above Subiaco. Then a long descent leads into the Ciociaria, and you finish lower than you started. The final road to Casamari is winding. Book your accommodation in advance.

Water & supplies

Bars and food shops in Fiuggi and Alatri; fountains in the Ciociaria towns. The opening climb to the Altipiani di Arcinazzo means about 15 km without services. Veroli, a few kilometres from Casamari, is the last convenient place for evening shopping.
