Overview
Leaving Tuscany and entering Lazio for good. The route crosses the Tuscia countryside and the hills of the Sabina, among centuries-old olive trees, towards the Benedictine abbey of Farfa.
Notes from the road
From Orvieto the road drops toward the Tuscia and then the Sabina. Olive groves offer little shade and the heat bites in the middle hours. Villages thin out, with stretches of fifteen to twenty kilometres without a bar. Farfa welcomes riders in a gathered silence, good for those arriving tired.
What to see
Countryside of the Tuscia, ancient olive groves of the Sabina, Abbey of Farfa
Where to sleep
Foresteria Abbazia di Farfa (donation-based / n/a); B&B in the village of Farfa (60-80€); Sabina agriturismo (65-85€)
Where to eat
Sabina country bread, Sabina DOP olive oil, pecorino cheeses, pasta and chickpeas, chicory frittata
Tips
Long (136 km), demanding stage (2,140m of climbing). Farm country with few services: carry water. Farfa is a quiet, intimate place: book the guesthouse in advance. On the real track it is 136 km and 2,140 m of climbing: better over two days, stopping at Orte (around km 80).
Water & supplies
Bars in Montefiascone in the first part, then Tuscia and Sabina with scattered villages: expect stretches of 15-20 km without refreshments. Fountains in the Sabine villages (Poggio Mirteto); olive groves with little shade and fierce summer heat. The Farfa guesthouse has water on arrival.
