Overview

From the Venetian foothills to the Euganean Hills: the route leaves Bassano along the Brenta cycle path, crosses a plain dotted with villas and walled towns, and finally climbs into the volcanic woods that shelter the Abbey of Praglia.

Notes from the road

Bassano gives way to the Veneto plain, dotted with villas and slow bicycles. The Colli Euganei arrive with a few sharp ramps in the final kilometres. In the woods around Praglia ticks are on the rise, better to check your skin in the evening. The guesthouse welcomes those arriving for vespers, calmly, with a glass of cool water.

What to see

Ponte degli Alpini in Bassano, elliptical walls of Cittadella, Venetian villas of the plain, Euganean Hills, Abbey of Praglia with its Renaissance cloisters

Where to sleep

Foresteria Abbazia di Praglia; Euganean Hills agriturismo (55-80€); B&Bs in Abano and Teolo (60-85€)

Where to eat

Bigoli with duck, Veneto Berico-Euganeo DOP prosciutto, Euganean Hills wines (Serprino, Fior d'Arancio), mountain-hut cheeses

Tips

An easy stage until the foot of the Hills: the last kilometres to Praglia climb in short ramps. Cittadella deserves a walk round its walls. Book the guesthouse and arrive for vespers.

Water & supplies

Bars and fountains in Cittadella at mid-stage and in the villages of the Padua plain; continuous services. Watch the traffic at urban crossings; the final Euganean Hills offer quiet roads and water in Teolo. Fountain at Praglia Abbey.
