Overview

A gentle journey across the Umbrian plateau from the Tiber valley floor towards Assisi, climbing through the rural, monastic heart of medieval Umbria.

Notes from the road

From Umbertide the road climbs gently through olives and wheat fields, unhurried. Valfabbrica marks the halfway point, a good bar to stop at before the last hills. The stretch toward Assisi stays isolated for some fifteen kilometres, but the phone catches signal almost throughout. Arriving early in the morning avoids the crowd that floods the pedestrian centre by midday. Assisi announces itself from afar, its basilica suspended over the green valley.

What to see

Tiber valley, Umbrian countryside of olives and grain, Assisi with the Basilica of St Francis (UNESCO), Giotto's frescoes, medieval churches, views over the Valle Umbra

Where to sleep

Assisi: religious guesthouses (50-70€, simple hospitality), hotels near the Rocca (80-120€), numerous B&Bs (60-110€)

Where to eat

Strangozzi with truffle, pappardelle with wild boar, torta al testo, local cheeses and prosciutto, lentil soup

Tips

A milestone of the pilgrimage: spiritually significant, with a moderate physical effort. Assisi is perpetually crowded: arrive early in the morning. The centre is pedestrian and maze-like: move calmly with your luggage.

Water & supplies

Fountains in Umbertide at the start and in the valley villages; bars in Valfabbrica at mid-stage. The hilly section between Valfabbrica and Assisi, about 15 km, is lonely but with steady coverage. Water at the fountains of Assisi on arrival.
