Overview
A great descent from the monastic mountains towards the Tiber valley and the Umbrian plateau, with a liberating loss of altitude through ever more pastoral landscapes down to Umbertide.
Notes from the road
The descent from the Casentino frees the legs after Camaldoli, through dense woods and cold morning air. The hairpins demand ready brakes and care over wet leaves in autumn. Then the upper Tiber valley opens slowly, with ups and downs that surprise anyone who thinks the stage already done. Città di Castello offers an easy cycle path along the river, a good point to fill bottles. Umbertide arrives with its Rocca to close a day longer than it looks on paper.
What to see
Descent from the Casentino, terraced fields and olive groves, upper Tiber valley, Anghiari (possible detour), Umbertide with its Rocca
Where to sleep
Umbertide: hotels in the centre (70-110€), B&Bs (55-90€), agriturismo (50-85€)
Where to eat
Umbricelli (Umbrian pasta), black truffle dishes, porchetta, local pecorino, Umbrian extra-virgin oils
Tips
A long, rolling stage: after the descent from the Casentino there are still several ups and downs in the upper Tiber valley to Umbertide. Manage your brakes on the descents. Better-kept, safer roads than the ridge sections. On the real track it is 123 km and 1,350 m of climbing: better over two days, stopping at Sansepolcro (around km 75).
Water & supplies
An initial descent through the forests, about 15 km without services and with poor coverage; then bars in Pieve Santo Stefano and Sansepolcro at mid-stage. Fountains in Città di Castello along the Tiber. From Sansepolcro onwards, regular villages.
