Overview
A short pastoral stage through the Pavia countryside to the Certosa di Pavia, still mostly flat, among rice fields, canals and monastic farmsteads.
Notes from the road
An almost restful stage, an hour and a half of gentle riding through rice fields and farmsteads. The Naviglio Pavese drops lightly south, the water a constant guide. Worth arriving early at the Certosa to visit unhurried, ahead of the tour groups. Mosquitoes make themselves known on summer evenings along the canals.
What to see
Abbey of Morimondo, Naviglio Pavese, farmsteads and rice fields of the Pavia countryside, Certosa di Pavia (Gothic-Renaissance complex, now a state museum)
Where to sleep
Pavia: hotels in town (70-120€), B&B historic centre (60-100€), guest rooms (55-90€). Since 2026 the Certosa has been a state museum run by the Ministry of Culture, with no guesthouse for pilgrims left: lodging stays in Pavia.
Where to eat
Risotto alla certosina, frogs alla pavese, zuppa alla pavese, Oltrepò wines, torta paradiso
Tips
A short stage, perfect for a quiet morning and a thorough visit of the Certosa (2-3 hours). Almost a rest day.
Water & supplies
A short stage through the Pavia countryside and rice fields: bars in Morimondo at the start and Motta Visconti at the halfway point. No isolated sections or difficulties; water at the Certosa on arrival. Mosquitoes along the canals in summer.
